Elissa Vance is a board certified music therapist and the owner of Align Music Therapy. She has been practicing since 2015 and has worked as a music therapist in a variety of settings including day programs, speech clinics, state hospitals, and in private practice. She has a passion to expand the field of music therapy and to help clients achieve their goals through music based exercises and interventions.
Music therapy is the practice of utilizing music exercises and music-based interventions, by a qualified music therapist, to meet a client's non-musical goals and each session may look very different for each client. What may look like a guitar lesson may actually be addressing fine motor and receptive language skills all while building self-esteem. Or perhaps what looks like passive music listening is actually a client discovering their own feelings through lyric analysis and expressing them through meaningful music selections. Music therapy can look like a lot of things, but the client's goals are paramount. For more information about music therapy please visit the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) website musictherapy.org and to find board certified music therapists in your area, visit the Certification Board for Music Therapists at cbmt.org.
